My lover, FrumPunk, has an interesting post about the hardships of being a non-NY blogger and NY accents (I wonder where he got his idea?). Click here to read it.
I can't help but agree with him on one thing - NY accents are horrible!
I know all of you NY readers will probably want to hurt me after I get this post up, but I find that as soon as a Brooklyn accent comes out of someone's mouth, it's like they automatically become less attractive. And for some reason, I associate the accent with a lower level of intelligence... (no hate mail please)
You've probably read my posts about how much I love British accents. When I was in the UK a little while ago, I felt a little stupid for sounding like a dumb American around people who spoke the Queen's English. Obviously, sounding posh doesn't necessarily mean that one is posh. But I still start speaking in a (probably bad) Brit accent every time I watch an episode of one my fave UK shows (Celebrity Big Brother, Skins, Secret Diary of a Call Girl - the second two are not for the faint of heart).
And my boyfriend had a good point about why we could never raise our kids in NY - they would sound like New Yorkers!

Agreed about the Brooklyn accent. I used to work at Brooklyn College and one of my co-workers said that she knew I wasn't from NY because I pronounced things correctly. lol.
As for the shows, an excellent British show is Extras. They only did two seasons and a made-for-tv movie type thing for the finale, but though it was short lived, it was still awesome.
I don't like the Brooklyn Accent either, but I don't find many people I know with it. I mostly see it on old TV shows. Also, I love the British accent, I find myself speaking it sometimes to myself for fun. It's so royal sounding. Brooklyn accents are bal gayva sounding.
bleh, hate most of English comedy. Same joke, over and over, for an hour, until it's not funny anymore.
+1 for Skins, a great show.
As for the Brooklyn/NY accent, I think it is subjective. There are different dialects of every language, and I would even go so far as to say that in England there are many people who sound very unintelligent too. It's all a matter of what you are used to. Not all British people sound like James Bond. And not all New Yorkers, sound like New yowkors.
Moshe: I remember that being the first thing you and Frum Punk discussed.
yep
How can Mr. Bean the movie be so funny, while Mr. Bean the series is so booooring?!
Moshe, you might be insane. I would get that looked at. If you want a great UK equivalent to Seinfeld, try Father Ted. I love it.
Also, the Mr Bean series is considered classic comedy.
Anyone ever see Shameless?
Nope.
Am not! And I have a paper that says I'm sane and fit to be part of society! So ha!
Meh, of American stuff, we watch House, Bones, Scrubs and Knight Rider (I know it's stupid but I loved the original). Our usual choice of poison is anime and jdrama.
MM: Watch Father Ted. Seriously.
Moshe, but do you have a paper saying you're human?
Unfortunately no, but I'm working on it. If Nobby can do it, I'm sure I can too.
here's to hoping my lashon harah had nothing to do with plane landing in the hudson river....
Baruch Hashem everyone is safe!
i dont like the brooklyn accent, but actually i dont particuarly like any new york accent and i live in ny. new yorkers think that their pronounciation is the proper pronounciation even when you try to tell them otherwise. after all, newscasters affect the midwest accent because its the most easily understood.
Maidel: well they say everything a Jew does effects the world...
but not to worry about it.
and yea, B"H everyone is safe.
and it shows that there are still good people in this world. The pilot checked the plane back and forth to make sure no one was stuck in the plane, before he left it. Truly amazing!
My accent is philadelphian, and with living in midwood, I cant take the brooklyn accent, but you get used to it.
sorry, but not all english accents sound so glamorous or intelligent (e.g., cockney)
Sorry girl, but as a native New Yorker who has been in exile for the past 21 years, I miss that dearly beloved sound.
LOZ: Totally agree - there are loads of British accents, only a few sound posh; some can make their speakers sound stupid, 'backwards' or uneducated. But it's like judging by appearances - totally inaccurate. And very posh accents can sound stupid as well.
